Welcome to our website! Here you will find all you need to know about the beautiful sport and pastime of Lawn Bowls.
This is a sport for all ages. Younger players are welcome at Ramsbury and Albourne Bowls Club from the age of 12 to 16 and pay a reduced membership fee of £45.00 until aged 17.
Adult membership (18 to 90+) is just £115.00 per season with no other fees to pay unless the various internal and Wiltshire League competitions available are entered.
However, if you want to give it a try, but are unsure if you would want to join, you can come along for a free months trial, all equipment including Bowls is provided. You just have to wear flat shoes to protect the green.
Bowls is quiet unique in that there is no difference between the ability of male or female players and everyone can enter most of the various competitions.
Bowls also offers a friendly social life with twice weekly “roll up” nights where all members are welcome and have the opportunity to play against other members of varying abilities.
Why not give it a try this year – the new season is underway.
Ramsbury and Aldbourne Bowls Club are entering teams in the new mixed triples, Saturday morning, friendly league starting in May. This league is organised by Bowls Wiltshire.
There are 3 leagues of 8 teams local to each other to reduce travelling times.
The teams are from Purton, Wroughton, Cricklade, Stratton Churchways, Supermarine, Pewsey, Royal Wootten Basset and Calne.
This is a friendly league, organised to provide all clubs with the opportunity to play for fun on Saturdays in a mixed friendly.
We are using two mixed triples and we will be able to give every member the chance to play without the commitment to play every Saturday.
This semi-fun league allows us to play other clubs not in our other leagues and to see other Greens in our area.
Swindon and District Monday league is two triples of either male and/or female players.
Ashley Baker league is three triples of mixed male of female players.
Bowls Wiltshire TR Saturday league is two triples which must be mixed male and female players.
Club Dress Code:
For all League matches and invitation friendly’s wear Greys, Club Shirts and suitable Bowls shoes, Bowls Shoes should be kept for Bowls Club use and not worn outside the Club, to avoid contamination of the green.
If members are involved in internal club competitions please remember to keep September 5th & 6th free in your diary for club finals days.
The Bowls Club is now closed for play. The new season will commence in April.
However, for the committee and other members who assist, maintenance of the green continues weekly throughout the winter. Thankyou to all who keep the green as one of the best, possibly THE best, in Wiltshire.
There was an unmistakable buzz at Ramsbury & Aldbourne Bowls Club on 28 June as the Falkland Islands international bowls team arrived for a crucial training camp ahead of the 2025 Island Games, to be held in Orkney.
The nine-strong visiting squad travelled 8,000 miles from their remote South Atlantic home, exchanging wintry winds for a Wiltshire heatwave that peaked at 30°C during a Saturday tournament.
The connection to Ramsbury & Aldbourne Bowls Club began through family ties. Laura, daughter of club members Ian and Sharon Barnes, accepted a teaching post in the Falkland Islands in 2018 after spotting the role advertised in the UK. Following a visit, Ian and Sharon were so taken with island life that they decided to relocate there themselves in 2021. That family move helped establish the strong link between Ramsbury and the Falklands team.
The contrast in conditions could hardly have been greater. With no full-size outdoor bowls green in the Falklands, the team had been training wherever space allowed. That included sessions on synthetic grass and, more unusually, inside a local school corridor. There, they laid out taped-together mats and practiced between classes.
“We had been unable to play when children and teachers were walking down the passage,” their captain, Chris, noted.
A Saturday American-style tournament saw local players and the Falklands squad compete side by side. Ramsbury’s own Chris Martin took top honours on the day.
For the Falklands bowlers, the chance to play on Ramsbury’s six lush grass rinks was a rare and valuable opportunity. Ramsbury & Aldbourne chairman Bob Osmond said, “Hosting the squad was a point of pride. They brought great energy and a real sense of dedication.”
The bowls club, part of the Ramsbury Recreation Centre, proved an ideal base as the Falklands team prepared for the first ever outdoor bowls competition in Island Games history. They hope to build on their 2023 Guernsey silver medal.
For these visitors, it was more than sport. It was a warm welcome, a patch of real green, and a world away from a school corridor on the other side of the globe.
So many younger people are discovering the joy of Bowls particularly with the introduction of the new Bowls Bash format of the game. The Club offers reduced membership fees for young people accepted by the committee.

There are many health benefits gained from playing Bowls. This is true for all ages but more specifically for the over 50’s.
Extract – “Regular bowls playing will improve strength, reduced risk of falls considerably, reduce mobility related illness and promote longevity and health”
As R&A BC continues to improve facilities a new Equipment Shed has been built to house new and updated green maintenance machinery. Photographs of the build can be viewed below.
Sincere thanks go to all members involved in its construction.
